Direct Push Tube Soil Sampling

DIRECT PUSH TECHNOLOGY FOR THE INVESTIGATION OF CONTAMINATED SITES AUSTRALIA WIDE

Direct push technology (DPT) has become the standard for environmental drilling in unconsolidated formations thanks to its high production rates, small footprint, high-integrity samples, and synergies with an arsenal of advanced site characterisation tools. The Geoprobe 77 and 78 series rig is the industry benchmark for direct push technology. Legion Drilling runs 6 of these rigs on the east coast our of Brisbane, Sydney and Townsville.,

The main DPT applications include:

Undisturbed soil samples from Geoprobe DT325 on display.

Direct push machines use the static weight of the rig combined with a dynamic percussion hammer to investigate relatively shallow soil and groundwater systems (<30 m below ground level). The production of investigation-derived waste (IDW) is minimal since the system does not generate drill cuttings.

Legion Drilling has Geoprobe® machines operating full time in Brisbane, Sydney and Townsville. We have used the system on thousands of sites across Australia and Asia-Pacific.

MAJOR BENEFITS

  • Multi-purpose: well installation, HRSC, sampling, injection of remedial amendments.

  • High production rates.

  • Rapid collection of high integrity samples (soil, groundwater, and vapour).

  • Small environmental footprint with minimal investigation-derived waste (IDW).

  • Maximum depths typically enough for most environmental investigations in unconsolidated media.

  • Easy and safe to operate.

  • Ideal for sites with limited access, including building interiors, carparks, and so on.

PUSH TUBE SYSTEMS FOR RAPID COLLECTION OF CONTINUOUS, UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLES

The cutting shoe and outer casing stay in-situ as the liner is extracted.

The DT325 and DT35 direct tube soil push sampling systems from Geoprobe® enable rapid collection of continuous, intact soil samples thanks to the combination of two sets of rods. Direct push sampling with dual tube ensures that the bore is cased during sampling preventing cross contamination and ensuring the bore does not collapse.

The dual tube’s unique combination of cutting shoe, sheath, and sample retainer allows efficient recovery of samples in formations ranging from plasticclays to saturated sands.

Liners for these systems are clear PVC with an integral core catcher fused to one end. This configuration maximises sample recovery while minimising entrance losses. It is also proven to be very robust in use compared to other sampling methods.

The DT325/DT35 direct push systems enable practical and efficient dual tube soil sampling using Geoprobe® 3.25 in. and 3.5 in. probe rods. The DT325/DT35 are primarily used under Geoprobe® models 66, 77, and 78 Series machines.

DT325/DT35 DUAL TUBE SAMPLING SYSTEM ADVANTAGES AND SPECIFICATIONS

  • Continuous, undisturbed samples for full depth of bore.

  • Liner is housed in a steel sheath ensuring sample integrity.

  • No requirement for drilling fluids.

  • Larger diameter core (46mm).

  • PVC Bio-liner comes with integrated Core Catcher and is biodegradable in landfill conditions.

  • Fast, simple, and safe operation.
