Drilling & Remediation Videos

GEOPROBE AIR SITE INVESTIGATION

We recently uncovered this old video which we understand is from around 2011 of our Geoprobe rigs working in Queensland Australia. The footage covers a few sites and provides a great window in to the interesting places and site we conduct contaminated land investigations. Drilling methods employed here show direct push undisturbed sampling and hollow auger monitoring well insatllation.

Bench Testing the UVOST

UVOST is arguably the most powerful tool available for the delineation of petroleum hydrocarbon LNAPLs such as free-phase gasoline/petrol, diesel, kerosene-type jet fuel, and crude oil. It is a Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) system enabling rapid identification of fluorescent molecules such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at centimetre scale. Additionally, it provides information about the type of LNAPL, weathering degree, and certain subsurface characteristics.

The application of UVOST is generally encouraged in sites impacted by light petroleum hydrocarbons. Too often, the presence of LNAPL in soil and groundwater (particularly below the water table) is overlooked by conventional investigation methods, thus leading to poor remediation performance, inadequate protection of receptors, and inefficient site management strategies.

The UVOST is a powerful addition to our environmental drilling services in Australia and provides critical information for the development of conceptual site models and remediation action plans.

Geotechnical Investigation at Women’s Hospital Adelaide

Legion Drilling drill crews doing their bit for the groundwater and geotechnical drilling investigation for the new Adelaide women's hospital. Public relations and liaising with the media is more common than you would think in the site investigation industry. There is never a dull day as a drilling contractor.

LOAD TESTING THREADED CL18 uPVC

As a drilling contractor we are often asked when pricing deep monitoring well drilling programs about the limits hanging PVC threads for installation. Suppliers are generally unwilling to comment on the load specifications of PVC threads so we put together a rudimentary test to give us some insight into this problem. For this test we used threaded class 18 50mm uPVC on our track mounted geotechnical drilling rig. The results were a big surprise to everyone.

We realise this is a rudimentary test and many variables would effect the results and this is not intended to be used for anything other than improving understanding.

Geoprobe 7720DT Rebuild

Our drill fitter takes a quick look at rig 12, our recently rebuilt Geoprobe 7720. This small track mounted machine is perfect for contaminated land investigations and the installation of groundwater monitoring wells without the use of drilling fluids. The powerful direct push function provides undisturbed sampling in unconsolidated formations including tailings, clays, sands and sediments. This rig is at home on the city streets as it is completing undisturbed sampling for a tailings dam. Originally purchased in 2008 the Legion Drilling maintenance team has far exceeded rig refurbishment standards. Many operational and safety components of the machine have been upgraded and improved to ensure she remains relevant and effective in changing requirements of Australian drilling contractors. Legion Drilling continues to provide environmental and geotechnical drilling services to Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide.
